"In the midst of echoes": quadraphonic performance-lecture
We listen for echoes. To hear the voice return to one's self, delayed, altered, confronting the uncomfortable feeling of the emergence of an ever-so-slightly alien reflection. Yet, what better way to think about learning/knowing through sound than with the character of the echo? Not simply an exercise in articulating space, echoes amplify the unique and entangled reflections of environmental sound and sonic lifeworlds. This performance-lecture works with echoes as a way of introducing the key concepts behind this new issue of High Pitch Magazine, and reflects on the turbulence of conflicting listening positions that should cause us to ask ourselves, "how do we do sound?"

In this live iteration of Promenade – Reverse, Ramona Ponzini brings to the stage a work originally conceived in 2023 for the Castello di Rivoli, in dialogue with Lothar Baumgarten’s Yurupari – Rheinsberg Room. Rooted in questions of access, the piece unfolds from field recordings captured during a walk through the Castello's inaccessible areas, interwoven with Ponzini’s live voice reading Baumgarten’s texts and his reflections on the Western obsession for categorization.

In this performance, Eugenio Toscano activates a wearable sound piece in which his movements generate and sculpt sound through an interplay of microphones, speakers, and cables. The body becomes an active component within this shifting feedback system, continuously responding to and reshaping its acoustic surroundings. Through this circulation of gestures and resonance, the work probes sound as a mode of perception, revealing how listening constructs spatial awareness and how the moving body participates in sensing, articulating, and transforming its environment.

soglia extends Kratu’s ongoing post-anthropological research, weaving field recordings and found voices into a practice attentive to the epidermal and transient effects of sound vibration on the listener’s body. Through prolonged sound and extended vocal and compositional processes, the work approaches the landscape as a site for gathering audible and subliminal phenomena.
